How to be successful sowing seeds in Winter

As we start sowing seeds in January and February it is important to set yourself up for success. Starting seeds at this time of year even in the comfort of your own home comes with challenges.
Firstly light levels at this time of year are very low and this can lead to new seedlings reaching up searchng and trying to find more light. This can result in them becoming leggy and the overall plant becoming weak.
Secondly; something that we often forget is we are trying to grow seeds that are from plants that originally come from warmer climates and many seeds require a set temperature range to promote germination. The problem many of us will have will be the variation in day-time and night-time temperatures indoors, this can result in poor and often sporadic germination rates.

To help us get started and try to mitigate some of these challenges we have invested in some cheap growlights and a single heated propagator. As you can see from our little set up, we have made use of a stepladder to ensure our lights can provide light over the top of the heated propagator.
Top Tip: Grow lights can help stop your seedlings going leggy.
